Blood and Guts, explained: five cages, one way out, and what Jacksonville puts on the line
A sourced history of AEW Blood and Guts since 2021, and what the Nov. 4 Jacksonville cage changes for the Callis Family, the champions, and NXT.
Analysis. Facts are linked to their sources; the read on what they mean is this desk’s, and it is labeled as such. Blood and Guts has not happened yet. Nothing below is a result from Nov. 4.
Analysis. AEW brings Blood and Guts to Jacksonville on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena, and AEW’s own event page bills it as the first time the match has come to the city. The match file is the Nov. 4 card. Two cage matches are announced. One is a men’s war between AEW’s champions and the Don Callis Family. The other is a women’s rematch in everything but name. And for the first time in years, the show will have company in its time slot: WWE has confirmed that NXT airs live that same Wednesday, opposite AEW, per Fightful.
This explainer does three things. It lays out how the match works, using AEW’s own description. It walks through every edition since 2021, with the finish of each sourced. Then, labeled as analysis, it reads what this year’s lineup puts at stake.
How the match works
AEW’s recap of the 2025 edition is the clearest public rulebook. Two teams enter one by one on a countdown, into a cage that covers two rings. When the final entrant is in, the cage is locked and, in AEW’s words, Blood and Guts has “officially begun.” The match is won when “a submission or surrender from an opponent” is earned. There are no pinfalls in that description.
That last rule is the whole personality of the match. A pin can be an accident. A surrender is a decision. Every finish in the history below comes down to someone choosing to quit, and most of the time they quit for somebody else.
2021: The Pinnacle and the cage roof
The first Blood and Guts aired on the May 5, 2021, Dynamite. The Pinnacle — MJF, Wardlow, FTR, and Shawn Spears — beat the Inner Circle of Chris Jericho, Sammy Guevara, Jake Hager, Santana, and Ortiz, per F4W.
The finish set the template. F4W reports that Jericho and MJF ended up on top of the cage, where MJF threatened to throw Jericho off unless the Inner Circle surrendered. Guevara surrendered the match. MJF then threw Jericho off the cage anyway, and Jericho landed on what F4W describes as a gimmicked pad near the entryway.
2022: Six on six, and a Sharpshooter on the cage
The 2022 edition came on the June 29 Dynamite. The Blackpool Combat Club — Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, and Wheeler Yuta — teamed with Eddie Kingston, Santana, and Ortiz to beat the Jericho Appreciation Society: Jericho, Guevara, Hager, Daniel Garcia, Matt Menard, and Angelo Parker, per F4W’s history paragraph.
Fightful’s results say Castagnoli made Menard tap out to the Sharpshooter, while Kingston, who had Jericho in a Buffalo Stretch, was dejected afterward because he had not made Jericho submit himself. That detail matters for the pattern: even in a win, the match was about who got the surrender, not just which team did.
2023: The Golden Elite and the chain
On the July 19, 2023, Dynamite, the Golden Elite — the Young Bucks, Kenny Omega, Hangman Page, and the debuting Kota Ibushi — beat Moxley, Castagnoli, Yuta, Konosuke Takeshita, and PAC, per F4W.
F4W reports the win came by submission when Yuta passed out while Page choked him with a chain, and that commentary pushed that Moxley submitted with Yuta unable to respond. F4W lists glass, thumbtacks, a table, a chair, a bed of nails, the chain, and handcuffs among the props. Again, the man who quit was not the man being hurt.
2024: Gasoline and “I quit”
On July 24, 2024, Team AEW — then-AEW World Champion Swerve Strickland, Mark Briscoe, Darby Allin, Anthony Bowens, and Max Caster — beat the Elite team of Matt and Nick Jackson, Kazuchika Okada, Jack Perry, and Hangman Page, per F4W.
F4W’s account of the finish: Perry was handcuffed to the cage and Allin doused him with gasoline, threatening to set him on fire unless he was granted a TNT title match at All In. Perry spit at him. A handcuffed Matt Jackson pleaded with Allin, agreed to the match on Perry’s behalf, and then said “I quit” to end the match for his team.
2025: The first women’s match, and a month that moved
The 2025 edition moved to November. AEW’s recap places it in Greensboro, North Carolina, on Nov. 12, and it carried two cage matches for the first time.
The opener was the first-ever women’s Blood and Guts. Mercedes Moné, then TBS Champion, Megan Bayne, Marina Shafir, and the Triangle of Madness — Thekla, Skye Blue, and Julia Hart — beat Kris Statlander, then AEW Women’s World Champion, Toni Storm, Harley Cameron, Willow Nightingale, Mina Shirakawa, and Jamie Hayter. F4W reports the finish: Shafir and Bayne punished Shirakawa while the Triangle of Madness held Storm back, and Storm surrendered to save her. Penelope Ford and Queen Aminata, both pulled from the match with injuries, made brief appearances, per F4W.
The main event was Darby Allin, Roderick Strong, and the Conglomeration — Orange Cassidy, Kyle O’Reilly, and Mark Briscoe — against the Death Riders of Moxley, Castagnoli, PAC, Garcia, and Yuta. AEW’s recap says the Don Callis Family attacked Briscoe before his entry, Gabe Kidd’s interference helped PAC put Allin through two flaming tables, and O’Reilly finally made Moxley tap out to an ankle lock and kneebar. The same night, per AEW, the Callis Family laid out Jurassic Express outside the arena, and Okada demanded the Young Bucks make a “decision” about joining the Family.
Full Gear followed 10 days later, on Nov. 22 in Newark, per the same AEW recap.
The pattern (analysis)
Five editions, six cage matches, and every documented finish above is a quit rather than a pin. In four of them — Guevara for Jericho, Moxley for Yuta, Matt Jackson for Perry, Storm for Shirakawa — the person who gave up was protecting someone else. That is not a coincidence of booking so much as the point of the stipulation. Blood and Guts asks who will stand there and watch a partner get hurt. This year’s teams are full of people with someone to protect.
2026: How Jacksonville was built
The men’s match
AEW’s Oct. 21 Dynamite recap is the origin story. Mark Davis and Jake Doyle beat the Young Bucks in an AEW World Tag Team Championship eliminator in under three minutes, earning a future title shot. Kyle Fletcher and Kevin Knight then beat AEW World Champion Will Ospreay and Adam Copeland after AEW International Champion Kazuchika Okada held his title in Copeland’s path. Don Callis brought Ospreay’s world title into the ring, handed it to Fletcher, and Fletcher hit Ospreay with it. Darby Allin and the returning Steven Borden made the save, and Borden laid down the Blood and Guts challenge, which AEW says was later accepted.
The lineup, as PWInsider printed it on Oct. 24: AEW Champion Will Ospreay, Adam Copeland, AEW Tag Team Champions the Young Bucks, Darby Allin, and Steven Borden against the Don Callis Family’s Kazuchika Okada, Kyle Fletcher, Wardlow, Kevin Knight, Mark Davis, and Jake Doyle. That is six on six. The match is announced.
Copeland made his position plain on the Oct. 24 Collision, per AEW’s recap: “You want blood and guts? November 4, Jacksonville, you got it!” The same recap says the Callis Family took Copeland out on that show, and Josh Alexander said he would love to fight Copeland “if he ever recovers.” As of PWInsider’s Oct. 24 lineup, Copeland is still listed. This desk has no source saying otherwise.
The women’s match
On the Oct. 24 Collision, Willow Nightingale challenged for the women’s match, per F4W: Nightingale and Wrathlander, Kris Statlander and Harley Cameron, with the Brawling Birds, against Divine Dominion and the Triangle of Madness. AEW’s Oct. 24 recap identifies the Brawling Birds’ Jamie Hayter and Alex Windsor as the AEW Women’s World Tag Team Champions Wrathlander faces at Full Gear, and F4W reports Statlander and Cameron pointed that out in the promo, with Nightingale affirming the champions would be on their side. Divine Dominion is Megan Bayne and Lena Kross, per AEW’s same recap. The match is announced.
The rest of the Callis Family’s week
Allin is the busiest man in this story. He defends the TNT Championship tonight on Fright Night Dynamite against the Callis Family’s Josh Alexander, per Fightful’s preview, then faces CMLL World Heavyweight Champion Hechicero, also a Callis Family member, at Arena México on Friday in a non-title match, per Fightful. Tonight’s result was not known when this piece was filed. The Callis thread follows that build on its own page.
What’s at stake (analysis)
No title is on the line, but nearly every title is in the cage. The printed lineups do not put a championship on either match. Still, the men’s babyface side carries the AEW World Championship (Ospreay), the tag titles (the Bucks), and the TNT title (Allin, at least going into tonight). The Callis side carries the International title (Okada), and Davis and Doyle hold a future tag title shot they earned by beating the Bucks. A surrender in a non-title match doesn’t move a belt, but it hands someone a very loud argument for the next title match.
The Callis Family is playing for a statement, not a strap. Look at the Oct. 21 sequence again: an eliminator win, a win over the world champion, a title belt used as a weapon. The Family has been told it is winning everywhere. Blood and Guts is the one match where nobody gets saved by a count of three, so a Callis win would answer the question of whether the run is real, and a loss would come with a name attached — whoever quit.
Allin is the one with the history. On the sourced record, this is his third straight Blood and Guts: on the winning side in 2024 after the gasoline finish, on the winning side in 2025 after going through the flaming tables. He walks into Jacksonville after two singles matches against Callis Family members in the same eight days. If the pattern holds that someone quits to protect a partner, Allin is the partner most likely to need protecting.
The Young Bucks have been on both ends. They won in 2023 with the Golden Elite. In 2024, Matt Jackson was the man who said “I quit.” Okada stood next to them in that 2024 loss; this year he leads the other side, and in 2025 he was the one asking them to make a “decision” about the Family. Their history with Okada is the most loaded relationship inside this cage.
Wardlow has never lost one on this record. He won with the Pinnacle in 2021. That’s one data point, not a streak, but he is the only man on the Callis side with a sourced Blood and Guts win.
The women’s match is a rematch with the roles stacked. Nightingale, Statlander, Cameron, and Hayter were all on the team that lost the first women’s Blood and Guts in 2025. All three members of the Triangle of Madness, and Bayne, were on the team that won it. Add the wrinkle that two of the babyface pairs are booked against each other for tag gold at Full Gear 10 days later, and the most likely crack in that team is not the cage. It’s the trust. That is this desk’s read, not a report.
Ten days to Full Gear, again. In 2025, Blood and Guts was Nov. 12 and Full Gear was Nov. 22. In 2026, it is Nov. 4 and Full Gear is Nov. 14 in Phoenix, per AEW. The road map orders those dates. The spacing suggests Blood and Guts is now the launch pad for Full Gear rather than a summer stand-alone. That is an inference from two dates, nothing more.
The other channel
Fightful reports NXT moved because The CW is carrying midterm election coverage on Tuesday, Nov. 3, and that this is the first time since 2021 the two shows have gone head-to-head on a Wednesday, “when AEW won the Wednesday Night Wars.” F4W reported Bryan Alvarez’s line that NXT “was told to load it up” (F4W).
The card says it did. Fightful’s Oct. 27 listing has John Cena appearing, the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic final between Noam Dar and Romeo Moreno and Hank and Tank, with Cody Rhodes presenting the trophy, and an unsanctioned match between Dion Lennox and Cruz Montana. Full card: /nxt/2026-11-04/.
Analysis: WWE is answering a cage with star power: two of its biggest names, neither in a match. AEW is answering with the stipulation it built. One is a promise of a moment. The other is a promise of a finish. On a head-to-head night, that contrast is the whole fight for the remote.
What we don’t know
- Darby Allin retained the TNT Championship on Oct. 28. PWTorch says Steven Borden’s partner list matches the lineup already filed. Anything AEW changes after that report is not in this paragraph.
- Whether Copeland’s condition affects his spot. No approved source says it does.
- Whether AEW adds non-cage matches to the Nov. 4 show. None are announced as of this filing.
- Whether any title will be put on the line. The printed lineups do not say so.
When the cage door locks on Nov. 4, this page stays as the preview. Results get their own file, with sources.
